My Apologies

August 29, 2008

I owe everyone here an apology. As you may know, I’ve been away for the week, and despite placing three of Hobbes/GRad’s IP addresses on moderation, the stain still got through and left his anti-feminist vitriol.

Obviously, when I go away in the future, I need someone to stay on top of these things. I’m sorry all of you had to deal with that. I’m leaving a lot of his comments up because they’ve been responded to, but I’ve deleted a few of them. Here are the IP addresses I’ve caught him using:

70.105.238.2
70.105.235.168
70.105.224.63
70.105.249.23

And now, Hobbes, you’re not welcome. Go crawl back to your hole.

Trouble Commenting?

August 14, 2008

Hey everyone,

If you’re having trouble commenting at all, please let me know. I’ve had one commenter email me several times in the past two days saying zer comments haven’t been going through, but otherwise the comments seem to be going through fine (to me, anyway).

So, if you get an error or your comment just doesn’t show up (unless you’re told it’s being moderated), please sent me an email at warwick(dot)derek(at)gmail(dot)com.

Thanks!

A Word on Dissent

July 27, 2008

Because I’ve deleted several comments in the past few days, I think it’s important for me to bring up the issue of dissent on my blog. To be clear, dissent is great… When you do it properly. If you want a good example of this, read Tak’s comments on this post. It would be pretty unfair for me to delete his thoughtful and respectful comments.

Now, if you’re going to write things like this:

This is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read in my life. I’m a rapist if we’re both drunk? What the fuck?

… Or this:

US Men don’t want mentally impaired or deranged Entitlement Queens and Princesses. And are just saying NO Thanks to everything connected with you.

… Then please don’t expect your comment to last long and expect your IP address to be moderated, depending on the comment and how I feel. Also, I really don’t think this needs to be said, but anti-feminist bullshit isn’t tolerated here. Example:

Feminists have done a great job of creating fear, distrust and hatred of Men in Women. Feminism is the theory Lesbianism is the practice.

If you have a problem with feminism, though, feel free to raise those concerns, when appropriate. (See Tak’s comments again for an example.) If I feel your comments aren’t on topic, though, I may very well just delete them, depending on how far off they are, but I’ll probably provide a warning first.

I hope this addresses any concerns and the accusations of censorship from the MRAs that I feel are nigh.

Discussion Policy Updated

July 10, 2008

Hey all,

Just so you know, the discussion policy has been updated. To save you a click, here it is in all its glory:

A crucial aspect of this space is (respectful) discussion. Disagreements will arise without a doubt and these are most definitely welcome; hate, however, is not. Rational arguments are encouraged and attacks on individuals will not be tolerated. Accordingly, unsolicited comments on an individual’s personal life are not welcome.

For the sake of convenience and ease of discussion, I don’t moderate comments. I will delete hateful or disrespectful comments, though, and do my best to do it quickly. I don’t want to restrict people, either, but if a commenter offends multiple times, the commenter will be banned.

Furthermore, portions of or entire comments that are irrelevant to the discussion or violate any of the terms discussed above will be modified or deleted at my discretion. Depending on the degree of any violation, I may also moderate any further comments from the individual in question.

Lastly, though, have some fun here, too. This should be a great place to discuss ideas and meet many amazing people.

I’ve also made a separate page for it, so it stands out a bit more. I hope this addresses some issues that came up while I’ve been away. Feel free to offer your thoughts on it, if you feel it could use some improvement.

You Might Have Guessed Something was Wrong…

June 25, 2008

For those of you who were looking forward to my live blogging of the International Women’s Health Symposium, you’ve likely guessed by now that something is up. Unfortunately, there is no Internet access in Macleod Hall, the room the sessions are held in. Nevertheless, I’ll blog about my thoughts on the conference hopefully within the next few days. I’m sorry for this, but I’m pretty disappointed myself!

Posting will be lighter

May 20, 2008

I’m taking some time to learn about some issues that I feel I don’t know enough about and challenging some of my own views, so posting will probably be lighter in the upcoming weeks. I’ll still plan to write, though. I’m also thinking about putting a zine together, about why we need feminism and on the sexism that exists everywhere, aimed for post-feminists and those new to feminism. If you have any good tips, I’d be glad to hear them.

Also, as I plan to do a lot of reading, if you have any favourite blogs you’d like to recommend, I’d be more than glad to check them out.

Facebook Page and Exams

April 22, 2008

Hey everyone, I’m just issuing a quick update.

Many of you may not know that I’m dead in the middle of exams right now. I have two more to write and will be done Thursday. This weekend I’ll also be taking off to the Alberta Public Interest Research Group retreat as I’ve recently been elected to a board position, and that will be a lot of fun. So, long story short: Posts are a bit scarce for a reason right now, but I’ll be on track as soon as I’m free. I’m also looking desperately for a summer job, which doesn’t help.

Anyway, for those of you on Facebook, I encourage you to add the Doing Feminism page to your profile! That would be pretty great.

That’s really it for now. Thanks so much for reading, everyone.

Best,
Derek

Some Changes Around Here

April 11, 2008

As you may or may not have noticed, I’m trying to make some changes around the site. I’ve added some links (more will be added later), and I’m going to work on making the site look a little nicer, too. It’s just so… plain.

Now, you may have also noticed a significant change: Doing Feminism now has its own domain! It’s pretty exciting stuff. Anyway, keep an eye out for new changes, and, if you feel so inclined, maybe offer some pointers as to what you’d like to see changed. I’m not very experienced with designing websites!

Just wanted to say…

April 2, 2008

Happy April, everyone!

This week will be crazy for me, but I should manage to get some posts in. I really want to write about WAM!2008 soon, so stay tuned!

Lack of Posts

March 15, 2008

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of posts lately, but I am swamped with paper-writing and preparing to go to Boston. I am trying, though!

On another note, I am going to a lecture on chastity tonight, sponsored by Go Life, the University of Alberta’s Pro-Life group. I will be sure to post on it later, so stay tuned!
