A, Well… Interesting Ad

Below the fold is an ad for the PS3 Thumb (I can’t find exactly what this is) for Playboy. A quick note, though: The ad is below the fold because it is Not Safe For Work.

I’m really baffled when it comes to what I think about this ad. Something about it irks me (besides the fact that it’s so strange), but I can’t place my finger on it.

For those of you at work or who otherwise cannot see the image, it is of a nude man (except for a jacket) sitting, and we are given a slight glimpse at his pelvic area, except that instead of a penis there, a thumb is in its place.

As I said, I’m lost for thoughts, but what are yours?

Thanks to Britt for the heads up.

It bugs me, too, and I’m not sure if I can articulate it. Something on the lines of “reducing a man to his joystick”?

I’ve seen it before but this just occurred to me…it’s the PS3 “thumb” right? So instead of having the penis as a sign of male power, the thumb is installed as the phallus instead?

    It’s a fake.

Now this is not an official Playstation 3 ad, Sony never gave the okay on this image. Wien, the Vienna office of TBWA, an advertising firm based in New York apparently did this visual. They no longer work for Sony, but apparently this image had nothing to do with it.

I know when I am expected to do work for my employers the penis references are generally supposed to be on the down low. I guess things are different in the ad world…

Thanks for that, Anna. I had my suspicions…

Despite it being fake, though, it still bothers me, and I really can’t determine what it is.
